About DT

DT is a hero workout honouring United States Air Force Staff Sergeant Timothy P. Davis, killed in Afghanistan in February 2009. It is five rounds of twelve deadlifts, nine hang power cleans and six push jerks, all performed at a single load without putting the bar down mid-movement if you can help it.

Why the rep scheme descends

The design is what makes it clever. The three movements share one barbell and one weight, but they get progressively harder as the bar travels further — a deadlift is the strongest position you have, a hang power clean is harder, and a push jerk overhead is the hardest of the three. So the rep scheme descends as the difficulty climbs, and the whole round is built to be linked if your grip and shoulders hold.

Where to break

That is the strategic question: where do you break. The efficient version links twelve deadlifts straight into nine hang power cleans, because dropping and re-gripping costs more than holding on. But the cleans wreck your forearms and the jerks demand a fresh shoulder, so most athletes break between the cleans and the jerks from round two or three onward. Decide your break points in advance. Rounds three and four are where DT is won.

What's a good DT time

Under seven minutes is a strong DT and elite athletes go under five. Seven to ten is a good competitive time and ten to fifteen is a solid result at the prescribed load. If the barbell is heavy enough that your push jerks become singles, scale it — the workout is meant to be a fast barbell cycling test, and a version where every jerk is a maximal effort is measuring something else entirely.
