Mary is a amrap workout by Fiz, built from 3 movements, with a 20 mins cap. It is set at advanced level.

About Mary

Mary is twenty minutes of five handstand push-ups, ten pistol squats and fifteen pull-ups, repeated for as many rounds as possible. It has the same shape as Cindy and roughly ten times the skill requirement — the same twenty-minute clock, the same three-movement rotation, three movements most athletes cannot yet string together.

A skill test with a clock attached

All three movements are gymnastics, and all three fail on technique before they fail on fitness. Handstand push-ups end when your midline stops holding a hollow position. Pistols end when the ankle mobility runs out or the balance goes. Pull-ups at fifteen a round accumulate faster than most people expect. If any one of the three is shaky fresh, it will be unavailable by round four, which is why Mary produces such widely spread scores among athletes of otherwise similar fitness.

Protect the handstand push-ups

The handstand push-ups are the movement that ends the workout, so they are the one to break first and smallest. Five is a set most athletes can hold together for three or four rounds and then cannot hold at all; going three-and-two from round one keeps them available at minute eighteen. Alternate pistol legs strictly rather than doing five on each side, and use the pistols as active recovery — they are the only movement here where you can breathe. Break the pull-ups into threes and fives before the fifteen-rep set starts costing you a whole minute.

What's a good Mary score

Ten rounds is a strong Mary and elite athletes clear twelve to fifteen. Six to nine is a good competitive score and most consistent athletes who own all three movements land between four and seven. Scale honestly and specifically: pike push-ups from a box for the handstand push-ups, a box-assisted or rolling pistol, banded pull-ups. Keeping the rep scheme and the twenty-minute clock intact is what makes the score worth re-testing.
